  3. Mexico requires a tourist visa (good for 6 months) when you are going further than the border region (usually 75 miles). It's about $21 per person and is usually included in your airline ticket.

      If you drive you will have to pay an import tax on your car. It is illegal to sell cars in Mexico, so you have to show that you drove your car out of the country.

      To re-enter the USA you need "proof of citizenship" which usually means a birth certificate + picture identification if you don't have a passport.

        Get a passport! It will greatly reduce the pain and suffering for your traveller (especially since he/she is a minor). NOTE: This rule changed in January of 2008. Previous to that date, the border patrol was accepting verbal oaths, and thousands of different kinds of identification (most commonly driver's licenses).
