  1. Yes, the temperature.  Tropical fish require a heater, and goldfish will lose their protective slime if the water's too warm.  Depending on the type of tropical fish, they may be aggressive and hurt the goldfish, or the goldfish may suck up the the small tropical fish.  Of course, if your tropical fish are saltwater fish, the goldfish can't live in that either.  I'm not sure there are any other reasons.  That said, I had neon tetras and goldfish together for some time.  All the neons eventually died though.  My Orinda goldfish is 17 years old.

  2. not all tropical fish live in salt water and you can't mix tropical fish and gold fish because they are messy. a lot of tropical fish are messy too. the real reason you can't mix tropical fish and goldfish is because goldfish are a very very aggressive fish and they would nip at the other fish in the tank. you even have to watch out for what type of goldfish you put with goldfish. another reason you can't mix the two is that goldfish do not need heaters in the water. you can put goldfish in water with a heater but the goldfish would end up dying. ( i learned from experience). on the other hand tropical fish do need a heater. other wise they won't survive.

  3. saline in the water

  4. im pretty sure

they require different kinds of water if im not mistaken

  5. goldfish are very.... messy

  6. 1. They live in different temperatures of water. Goldfish cold water. Tropical fish warm water.

  7. Tropical fish reside in salt water and goldfish reside in fresh water.  when the water is treated so that the tropicals can live it will kill the goldfish.  If it has no salt in it the tropicals may die.

  8. Tropical fish has NO relation to salinity!  This is a term entirely regarding the temperature.  There are tropical freshwater fish (which I assume you're talking about), coldwater freshwater fish, tropical marine fish, and coldwater marine fish.

Goldfish require cooler water (below 72*) than the freshwater tropicals (above 76*).  When kept in warmer water, their metabolism speeds up considerably, shortening their life span and causing them to produce waste on a much grander scale.  Also, warm water holds less oxygen, and Goldfish have adapted to cooler, well oxygenated water-- tropical temperatures literally suffocate them over time.

Goldfish are crapping machines, and while this is easily resolved with good filtration and proper maintenance, it is still a threat.

Goldfish will put just about anything in their mouths, and a small Tetra will be a quick treat for an adult Goldfish (more than a foot long).

Goldfish are herbivorous and need more vegetable matter in their diet than most tropical fish, which thrive on high-protein diets that will constipate the Goldfish.

  9. besides, the temperature is the tank requirements, goldfish produce a awful lot of ammonia, which may kill your tropical fish, and goldfish are more prone to disease when the temperature is above 80 degrees.I have a small fantail in my large 60 gallon tank along with some livebearers and firemouths with no problems at all.
