  1. #1 most important thing to do is get you and your car, if driveable, the heck off the road.

I've read and have witnessed time and again someone getting in a fender bender, then both stop right in the middle of the road and get out of there cars to talk and WHAMMO! They get creamed by traffic.

#2 is never admit guilt. It's a cruel world while Lawyers are still allowed to breath.

  2. Do your senior First Aid. It will cost less than $100, and about $30 or $40 if you are a student. I recommend Vital first aid as it only takes a day, but  St John's ambo is cheaper for students.

    First call the emergency number.

Then assess the following(Senior First Aid)

    DRABEC

Danger - always be aware of danger and ensure you do not put yourself in danger when going to the assistance of another person.

Response - is the person conscious? Do they respond when you squeeze their shoulder and shout their name?

Airway - clear the airway of any obstruction (for example, the tongue rolled back and blocking the airway, vomit or food) and keep it clear by placing the person on their side with their chin tilted back. This can be enough to save a person's life.

Breathing - check if a person is breathing with the look, listen and feel technique. Look to see if the chest rises; listen for the sound of breathing from the mouth or nose; and feel for the rise of the chest or breath against your cheek. Learn how to use Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR) or the Kiss of Life, to help a person who is not breathing.

##Circulation - (NO LONGER REQUIRED SINCE 2007!!!) learn how to check for a pulse. Practise on yourself, friends and family. Feel for the carotid pulse on the neck, below the jaw line next to the Adams Apple.

Also TAKE CONTROL of a situation. If you have read this, you already know more than most and would be the most experienced in the crowd. Have confidence. Move people away from the person. Identify a bystander, ask for their name, and charge them with communicating with the ambulance while you help the injured people. By asking their name, and referring to them as 'John', rather than 'hey you', they will feel personally involved and will not disappear as an anonymous face.

If someone is unconscious, and another has a broken arm, leg and a cut on his face, go straight to the unconscious person. They need your help the most, despite the cries of the person in pain. They are awake so they will live.

Make sure people around you are not saying "oh my God, he's had it" etc etc. Unconscious people are often completely aware and can hear people taking. STRESS IS WHAT KILLS PEOPLE - they may not know they have lost their legs because of shock, but if they hear people gawking, they may become highly stressed, where the body rushes blood away from the head to the heart and around the body, which can kill them.

First Aid is extremely important and very, very simple. I had no work-related reason to learn it, I just did it so I will never regret it if I need to save a life. Everyone, I mean everyone, can do it.

##DO NOT check for a pulse!! The recommendations changed in 2007. Check breathing instead. If there is no breath, then begin compressions. A person can suffer brain damage in the time it takes to establish a pulse reading.

  3. first get yourself out of danger, then call the police. never admit fault. get to a doctor or emergency room have everything checked (do not skip corners). then the most important....... GET A LAWYER!!!!!!!!!! he / she will know what to do from here. most lawyers work on a get paid if you win basis. so no payment from you unless you win a settlement or win in court. usually around 40% these days. good luck.

  4. Determine the Extent of Damage or Injuries

File a Car Accident Report with the Police

Discuss the Car Accident Only with the Police

    Get the Facts

    Call you Insurance Agent
