  1. overdue then missing, presumed lost: ships  still just plain vanish

    stranding / grounding.....running aground

breach of contract by not adhering to schedule...rare but still in existence

foundering: sinking by being overwhelmed by weather

    collision

leakage: from decks or hull damaging equipment or cargo

    fire / explosion

shifting cargo: damaging cargo in the holds.rare now a days; more common is

loss of containers overboard due to high seas

p****y, esp off Somalia, Nigeria, Singapore/South China Sea

and a word you don't see every day: barratry:

"A fraudulent breach of duty or willful act of known illegality on the part of a master of a ship, in his character of master, or of the mariners, to the injury of the owner of the ship or cargo, and without his consent. It includes every breach of trust committed with dishonest purpose, as by running away with the ship, sinking or deserting her, etc., or by embezzling the cargo."

  2. Hull and machinery, cargo, liability, injury and loss of life

  3. spoiled cargo,sunken vessel,run aground,

I would say there are only 2 types of marine losses.....

    1....financial

    2....life
