  1. everything around us that has volume and mass is matter.matter or any substance is made up of small particles.an atom is the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same substance. atoms make up elements and elements combine to form compounds

    The element itself constitute of even smaller particles:protons neutrons and electrons.the nucleaus is the small dense positively charged center of the atom. it conatins most of the atom's mass.so protons and neutrons are found inside the nucleus.

    outside of the nucleus electrons thar are negatively charged particles are likely to be found around the nucleus within electron clouds.ana tom is neutral because there are equal numbers of protons and electrons so they cancel out( the proton and electron are of opposite charge but equal size)

    scientists at the beginning thought that electrons are the smallest particles but later they found that even protons neautrons and electrons are made up of smaller particles which they called QUARKS.quarks are the most tiny particles that cannot found alone.this means we can't find a single quark alone but in groups. many quarks can form the proton or neutron.

  2. Generaly, atoms are particles made up of:

    Electrons -- tiny and negatively charged

    Protons -- much bigger and positively charged

    Neutrons -- about the same size as a proton but with no charge

    The number of protons decides what element something is.

    1 = Hydrogen

    2 = Helium

    3 = Lithium

    ...

    82 = Lead

    and so on.

    Both the neutron and proton make up the nucleus of an atom. Compared to the actual volume of the nucleus the nucleus is as big as a pea and the atom would be a baseball stadium. Electrons "circle" around the nucleus (actually they are no longer thought of as orbiting the nucleus, the quantum mechanical model has the electrons existing in clouds of probability)

    Quarks are what make up protons and neutrons. There are six kinds of quarks (these are known as flavors): Up, Down, Strange, Charmed, Bottom, and Top.

    The proton is made up of two Ups and one Down.

    The neutron is made up of two Downs and one Up.

    The electron is its own subatomic particle
