What are auras and what do they do?

I've heard on the internet and have seen on tv shows about phenomenon. Occasionally auras will come up, but can someone explain them to me?

Do they really react to a person's emotions with colors and size? Do only people have them, or all living creatures?

Auras are just another item on a list of New Age woo-wooisms.  People claim they can see some sort of spiritual smoke given off by other human beings.  It's at best harmless delusion, but at its worst predatory fraudulence.

Beware of anyone who claims to be able to see, do, smell, fell, etc. anything paranormal.  Anytime someone claims they can do something like that your BS meter should start beeping.  What they are saying in essence is, "Just trust me."  Just because some preposterous claim has some feel-good, spiritual explanation doesn't make something unsubstantiated and unfalsifiable any more believable.

Once, a colleague I was working with told me that he could read auras. He then proceeded to tell me that my aura was red and that he was surprised I hadn't commited suicide yet. He said red meant extremely sad and upset.

But, at the time, I was quite happy with no serious problems in my life.

No, the auras around a person are merely the heat given off from the body. Fake psychics pretend they can read auras, because nobody else can see them, and we have to take thier word for it. The same people who tell us of some future event which will happen at an indefinite point in the future. They do this because we can't argue that this event might possibly occur sometime in the future.

They're bogus. I've met several aura seers over the years.  I ask them if they see an aura over my head. They say yes. I then ask them if they could locate me using my aura if I stand behind a wall only slightly taller than I am.  None have ever taken the challenge. Seems to me if they could really see it, a simple experiment shouldn't be a problem.
