What are bars; muscial terms?

i am audtitioning for a musical and it says i need to sing 16 bars of a song, what does that mean? and how much of the broadway song 42nd street do i have to sing to equal 16 bars?

a musical score i divided into bars.

each bar is futher divided into beats.

ie 4 beats to the bar. count 1 2 3 4 etc.

generally songs are 32 bars altogether.

so one bar equals 4 beats. the bars help to stucture the music and make it easier to follow by diving into smaller parts.
