  1. You can learn even though you are isolated by either distance, disability (which affects your ability to attend school), other commitments (like work or family).

    You can also learn things that you wouldn't normally be able to learn if you were just relying on the schools in your area. For instance you may want to do a course in something which is not offered in your state but is offered in another state.

Generally, distance learning will fit into your schedule better than a traditional classroom setting.  Often, it will also be cheaper, because there is no cost for facilities (no utilities for that classroom you're not using, etc...).  In my opinion, I would rather go to class- encourages more questions, gives you a chance to meet fellow students to set up study groups, means you have a chance to network in your given field, etc.  But if you must distance learn, set yourself a schedule and stick to it.  Tried it once myself about 5 years ago, went poorly, have done it again since with more success, but still not my favorite way to attend class...
