  1. It varies from  river to river, some fish better when there has been allot of rainfall as it disturbs the deeper crustaceans, others flood and finding and fishing for trout is very hard, overcast days can work very well, sticking to the deeper pools of the river works well especially when fished with deeper water Czech nymph style flies. Fishing in fast water can be hard for a person who is new to the sport, stick to the deeper pools, fishing under tree cover can be hard for your casting but your chance of actually catching anything is increased greatly as often trout will feed on ants and other insects stuck in the surface film. Rocky river beds can also work in your favor as its often  better habitat for the smaller crustaceans brown trout like to feed on. If your willing to travel check out Bessy beck fly fishery, they have their own beat of river you can fish for wild browns, they should also be able to offer you some advice on what patterns to use, search Bessy beck on google or yahoo and you will find their web site.

  2. I think you'd be better off if you gave us more information such as what you will be fishing with...

most likely a fly rod - but what flies/streamers do you have available to you?

or if a spinning rod ....

    What tackle do you have?

I was stationed in the UK for three years and did alot of fishing...more info please.
