  1. It depends what you want to do and what "look" you like... and what your budget is.

    What to look for:

    Mic-in jacks. XLR preferred.

    Big lens.

    Big imaging chips.

Short list for consumer gear (1/8" mic in jack):

    Canon HV20, HV30

    Sony HDR-HC7, HC9

Short list for "prosumer" gear (1/8" mic in jack requires XLR adapter like BeachTek or juicedLink)

    Sony DCR-VX2100, HDR-FX1, FX7, HVR-HD1000

    Canon GL2

Short list for "Entry level" pro gear (all with XLR audio-in):

    Canon XL2, XHA1

    Sony HVR-V1U, Z1U

    Panasonic DVX100B, HVX200

There are others - notably in the Sony XDCAM, Panasonic pro area and some JVCs, but these are a good start.

ALL of these camcorders use miniDV tape - that means you transfer video to you computer using Firewire connecting the camcorder's DV port to the firewire port on your computer. There are no "pro grade" internal hard drive AVCHD compressing camcorders. If you are pro-grade, the hard drive stores DV or HDV format - refer to the FireStore drives from Focus enhancements:
