A blind spot is an area that you can't see either through the mirrors or by turning your head to check. It gets worse if you are using a cellphone while driving without a handsfree headset.

Unless you are in a convertible, your car has sections that at the right angle can briefly hide another vehicle.   Trucks have massive blind spots. You may have noticed warnings on the back or sides of large trucks informing the drivers of smaller vehicles that there are areas where the truck driver just won't see them.

You can often reduce your blind spots by adjustment of the mirrors.  For instance, you don't really need to see any part of of your own car in your side mirrors. Angle them out slightly more, so you have a better view of the lanes behind you on either side.

Know that you have blind spots, and always check all the mirrors and look by turning your head before changing lanes.

Know that others have blind spots and don't drive in them.  Trucks sometimes show a graphic of the blind spots on a rear sticker.  For most passenger cars it will be when your cars front end is even with their rear bumper in the adjacent lane.

You check your blind spots when making a turn, backing up straight, and changing lanes.. You look left and right. If your going in the right lane you look right and if your going in the left lane you look left. Always use them because you never see out of the mirrors that you have.
