  1. Also known as blinkers, they use them for harness but also on race horses, but with race horses they usually use sheep skin blinders on the side of the bridle.

  2. Blinders, also known as blinkers, are meant to reduce spooking and keep the horse focused on his work by restricting most of his vision.  They're based on the idea that if a horse can't see it, it can't be bothered by it.

It is possible to reduce a horse's sensitivity to things that bother it through careful training and leadership, but it requires time and is not 100% effective.  Even the most bombproof police horses still spook from time to time.  Back in the old days when people relied on horses for transportation, many people were not willing to take the time to train their horse beyond their most basic needs, or they didn't have the time or expertise.  However, a harnessed horse that spooked could cause horrible accidents on the road, injure or even kill people, cause considerable property damage, and result in the destruction of any goods that were being transported.  In many places, the owner or driver of a runaway carriage could also be fined or even be jailed.  So they used other methods to prevent spooking.  Blinders proved to be a most popular method since they were inexpensive, simple, didn't require any of their time, and really seemed to work.

Since most modern harness designs are replicas of or based upon those older times, blinders are included to keep with looks that have become traditional, as well.  Even some carriage drivers who have rock steady horses will use blinders in order to have a traditional look.

  3. The thinking for including blinders in a harness horse bridle is to keep him from seeing the cart behind him which might spook him. Blinders are extra pieces of leather on the bridle that block part of the horse's field of visions.

I'm not sure if I agree with the reasoning, but that is the justification I have always heard.

  4. Also known as "blinkers"  they are to restrict the horse's vision so that it can only see in front of it. They stop the horse from being distracted and, because of the way a horse's eyesight works without them he would be able to see the cart behind him and be frightened by it.

  5. They are devices used to cut down on the horses peripheral eye site thus cutting down on side line distractions.

Or better known for what people wear when they don't want to see the truth....

    :o)

  6. i thought they were called blinkers?they are there so that the horse cant see the cart behind it so that it doesnt scare the horse!

  7. blinkers??

for horses who drive, restricts their site to just foward so they have less chance of spooking

  8. they keeep the horse focused

  9. Blinders this black like circle that goes on the side of the horses eye. It makes it so the horses can't see whats next to them so they don't get spooked by things.

  10. blinkers are used so the horse doesn't get distracted by things happening around him/her, if we didnt use them the horse would be looking at everything else and not concentrating on what its spose to be doing.

    hope this helped
