I bought the guitar online in Canada and had it shipped to a friend in the US. When I go down there to pick it up, how much will it cost me to bring it across the border? Does it matter that i bought the guitar in Canada, and will it be over $300

Thanks.

  1. That was an awkward way of shipping something, I must say.

If the guitar is made in Canada, there is no duty payable.  You will be required to pay GST and PST on it.  5% GST and whatever PST is due in your province.

  2. you should contact customs and let them know you aren't buying this from the states but just getting it back.

  3. If the guitar was manufactured in the United States, Mexico or Canada it will qualify under NAFTA and will be duty free. In that case you would just pay GST (and PST depending on where you live) when returning to Canada.

If the guitar is made somewhere else you will pay GST (& PST if applicable) + duty on the excess over your personal exemption. The amount of personal exemption depends on how many days you are in the US.

The duty rate will depend on "the goods you are importing, the country where the goods were made and the country from which you are importing them."
