I need sources for this, by the way.

What are cars made out of?

What are airbags made of?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of the material airbags are made of?

Info or links to sites about the effectiveness of car satefy features would also be very helpful.

And statistics about how much certain car safety features i.e. airbags, seatbelts, crumple zones etc. would help too.

Thanks.

  3. Lots of good questions there mate !

    Well lets start with cars,

Car bodies are generally made from steel, over the years the process has become more demanding though as companies try to adapt to new styles and demand for performance and economy. Steel is the favourite but now days companies like BMW and alike use recycled steel among other materials. Take the New Mercedes S class, made almost completely out of recycled material... There is sound proof that the Mercedes S class is more environmentally friendly than the Hybrid Toyota Prius.

Another materials that car bodies are also made of are Aluminium, Fibre glass, Carbon Kevlar, plastic and sometimes a mixture of all of those.

If you think about the interior then there are many other materials included, most of which are similar to household furnishings, wood, plastic, foam, leather, metals, glass etc etc.

Lets move on to Air Bags...

I can answer this for you,

The Bag is made out of polyester fibre or nylon, the deployment components used are a gas charged cylinder for deployment and a postage size piece of semtex to blow off the outer covers.. also a load of sensors etc to assist in firing the airbag at the correct time.

The materials used in airbags have different results, some Ford airbags are rather harsh and bruise people and its also been know that they can graze your skin as you hit them,  the materials used in Mercedes are light and more like a plastic silk.
