  1. Ceremonial powers are something a constitutional monarchy has because of the separation of powers (the three branches of government are separated.)

Constitutional monarchs often have only 'ceremonial powers', or more commonly 'ceremonial functions', such as representing the country while traveling or acting as a symbol for the whole country.

Basicly all they do is look good for their country without having a say or imput in how its run.

  2. Powers which a monarch purports to exercise, but only as a figurehead.  For example, the Queen opens Parliament each year and reads a speech which is prepared for her by the government of the day as if it were her own.  She may well disagree with its contents, but she has to perform her ceremonial duty of opening Parliament and reading the speech.  Likewise she has to sign state papers as and when she is told to.  She must entertain visiting heads of state and in turn represent her country in visiting other countries. She confers honours such as knighthoods on people at special ceremonies, but those people are selected by politicians. In other words, she appears to wield power, but the real power is wielded elsewhere.

  3. Ceremorial power', in the generic sense of 'symbolic power', relates to real power. The presidnet of the first African colony to become an independent state, while reserving more and more sources of real power for himself as head of state, wished to maintain as much as possible of the ceremonial power of tribal chiefs whom he regarded as a specifically African institution.
