My Friend & I are college students visiting for the first time. We will be here for about 2 weeks, and when converting the USD to GBP we dont have much money to spare. The budget would be maybe 5GBP for lunch and 10-15GBP for a dinner. Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, Chinese foods are a mixture of what we like. We are staying near the Barbican/Old street stops..not to far from them...so any advice or recommendations would be appreciated!!! thanks soo much!!! x

  1. That’s a very tight budget, but here are a few ideas:

You might want to pick up a copy of the TimeOut Cheap Eats guide - it could prove very helpful on your trip, and you can always re-sell it when you get home.

In Clerkenwell (Farringdon, Barbican, Old Street areas), you might like to visit the little market on Leather Lane. There’s a mix of stalls selling jewellery, flowers, fruit & veg, etc - but also some food stalls, including a great burrito and fajita stall. Also look at Spitalfields Market - it has stalls selling food from all over the world at bargain prices.

On St John Street, try Pho for cheap Vietnamese food. (They also have a branch near Oxford Street).

For Indian food, you could try Masala Zone - a cheap and cheerful chain selling pretty good curries. It should cost you no more than £10-£15. Also consider Chowki and the Indian YMCA near Warren Street.

For budget Asian food, head for Chinatown and try Café de HK, Hing Loon, HK Diner and Jen Café. (Use google for the addresses).

Abeno is a good choice for budget Japanese food. Lunch should cost around £10-£15.

You can get hundreds of ideas from Londoners and tourists alike on the UK Chowhound forum. Here are the search results for ‘cheap London’:

Also, a lot of London restaurants run very good special offers. Check out London-Eating’s offers page:

Enjoy your trip J Have fun hunting down the bargains and try not to worry about the exchange rate too much!

  2. Mc Donald's

  3. Any Wetherspoons pub is pretty cheap for food and drink and do a lot of buy 2 for a discount meals.

  4. Try some of the vegetarian restaurants in the Neal's Yard area (near Covent Garden).
