  1. I don't understand what you mean by classification. Do you mean weight class? I believe that Arnis doesn't have weight class.

I don't have formal arnis training, as my actual training is in Indonesian silat. I did have the honor of training several time with some doce pares guy and did some training with one of the dog brothers.

Salutation include folding the stick on the chest and bow before fight and another one after that. (rarely done in Dog brothers as usually the losing side still lies on the ground in pain)

Traditional arnis and silat wear the silat uniform which is kinda loose pants and loose shirt tied in the middle using a cloth belt usually the color of the unifor is black.

Equipments used in sparring are usually pipe with foam layer and plastic knives.

Lots of schools use marking knives that have marker ink on the edges to show where contact was made with the knife and how fatal the cuts are

Dog Brothers use real sticks with the participants wearing helmet (usually kendo helmet) and safety gloves.

Filipino art when they use a combination of stick and knife will hold the stick in right hand and knife in the left hand. Indonesian silat hold the knife in the right hand and the stick in the left hand.

Scoring with a modern escrima federation is using 10 point system with fighters wearing helmet and padded body armour I never really like this system as it usually just two people swinging their sticks trying to hit the other more often than him getting hit.

Dog Brothers mostly go with minimum protection and using real sticks with no real rules, they try to promote it as Higher Learning through pain.

Dog brothers rule also allow participant to go into grappling

Scoring on a more traditional escrima fights usually depends on the marking made in the fight. A fatal cut will usually score highest and end the competition.

This goes back with the root of filipino art where the stick is actually a machete. Something which obviously can't be train using the real thing.

I like this training as it really focus on the defense too and not just the offense as with other schools.

One cut that you can score on their neck worth will win you the fight even if they made 3 cuts on your arm or shoulder.

Arnis is only one name of the filipino art styles among many.

Modern Arnis I think is pretty big in US.

Doce Pares is one of the biggest school in Philliphine with their sticks also being very famous.

Sayoc Kali has several schools in US and if I'm not mistaken they focus more with their knives than other filipino place

  2. I can't do the assignmen for you, but I'll help a little -

Classification - Arnis, Modern Arnis, or Arnis de Mano is a Philipino martial art using empty hand (no weapon) techniques.

The major distinction of arnis is that it focuses on utilizing angled attacks rather than direct attacks. To clarify - many martial arts teach striking directly at a target; arnis teaches moving side to side to open angles of attack.

Arnis also emphasizes "obstacle destruction" rather than "obstacle removal". This means that an Arnis practicioner may attack a punch (elbow to the incoming fist) or may attack the arm (punch or elbow to the bicep). This "destroys" the opponent's tools, rendering the opponent weaker with every strike. This is completely different from many arts which utilize grabbing, trapping, or dodging the punch (obstacle removal). That's a brief overview of what arnis methods are - the other stuff is easy to find.

While you are searching Arnis - check out:

    Escrima - sometimes spelled Eskrima

    Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)

Google will send you to some goods sites - wikipedia has a pretty darn good definition with links too.  These should help you find the info you need.

    Arnis/Eskrima Jugado

This is recent development in the world of Arnis/Eskrima where it is practiced and promoted as a sportive competition in tournaments participated by practitioners matured and young alike. Rules and guidelines on points, safety and protection are laid down to ensure the safety of the participants, to develop sportsmanship and the competitive spirit of the Arnisadors. Arnis Jugado is a very effective way to promote, propagate, capture and sustain the interest of the young

people, and new comers into the world of Arnis. Currently there are two categories in Arnis Jugado: “Labanan” ( Combat) and “Anyo” (Form). If Arnis is to be made popular and acceptable to the majority of the masses especially kids and teenagers and young adult alike, it is this kind of Arnis that will be appropriate. It is basically inherent to man to prove to himself and others that he is better than the other and in return gets recognized and rewarded. It is this sense of

competition and need to achieve something higher that motivate great athletes, sportsmen, students, businessmen, professionals, researchers to persevere and move on and face the odds.

    Arnis/Eskrima Entablado

This is the kind of Arnis/Eskrima that is inherently practiced for exhibition and to entertain the viewers since Pre-Hispanic times, Hispanic times and our present modern times. Flashy and spectacular moves, techniques and motions are dominant and some even performed with more acrobatic forms and exaggeration to make it look more impressive and powerful, formidable, complex, artistic and entertaining. It can also be in the form of linked forms, dances, pre-arranged fights and duels conveying a story like “moro-moro” and “zarsuela” in Barrio and Town fiestas. Practitioners of this must have the gift of artistry and creativity. This kind of Arnis is a good vehicle to promote the art.

    Arnis/Eskrima Matador

This is the kind of Arnis/Eskrima for the streets and self defense. It is basically a kind of Arnis practiced for self defense. Most often it is practiced in conjunction with or other unarmed self defense systems like grappling, wrestling, and kicking making it a complete self defense system. Other practitioners make it up as another level to be pursued by those who started off from Arnis Jugado and or Arnis Entablado .

    Arnis/Eskrima Guerrero

This is supposedly the Arnis/Eskrima as Martial Arts for the warrior class, rajas and chieftains a rarity in these modern times. Very select few Eskrimadores pursue to elevate their growth in this kind. Very few in the context that it is not economically viable as a livelihood and with the prevailing mindset of the current generation who loves something fast. Fast cars, fast computers, fast courses, fast foods to name a few. It is definitely not for everybody as it requires a practitioner to possess certain attributes in order for him to be fitted and get immerse into this level of Eskrima System. It is practiced to protect not only the person but in a greater context the community and society as a whole. Most often this has closely guarded disciplines, principles, theories and philosophies that require oral transmissions and elucidations for the system to be completely understood and honed to an ever higher level of mastery and perfection. The arts does not only center to killing but healing and life management as well. It may take a lifetime to master the different facets of these arts making mastery a lifelong journey and a way of life.
