Question:

What are clouds?

I know that they're up in the sky, and sometimes rain comes from them, but seriously, what are they made of? Why don't they come closer to the ground? Why do they move? Why can we fly through them?

  1. Cloud is an aggregate of very small water particles, ice crystals,or a mixture of both with its base above the earth's surface. Most of the clouds form in the troposphere only.At temperatures below zero degree celcius, cloud particles frequently consist entirely of  super cooled water droplets. They are formed mainly as the result of vertical motion of air,as in convection,or in forced ascent in high ground or in a the large-scale vertical motion associated with depressions and fronts.

Clouds do not move by themselves;they are carried away by winds prevailing at that level.Clouds form over the ground also. They are called fog;stratus cloud forms near the ground. You are able to fly through them as they contain only very tiny water droplets .it is similar to your walking through the fog.

  2. its only water but in a different state. there are many types of clouds ( but all are made up of the same thing- water) Fog is also a cloud- a low lvl cloud. the other post before me explains everything you need to know.

  3. water

  4. Water Vapor and small pieces of dust. Wind moves them. Their is plenty of space inbetween molecules and its pretty much a gas so its like moving through dense air

  5. They are the same water vapor you see when you breathe out on a cold day or open a freezer on a hot humid day.  They can form at any level.  Yes, even at ground level.  When they form at ground level we call them fog.  They move with wind current and airplanes fly through them just as we can drive or walk through fog.

If you ever watch a weather report and hear the term "dew point" that has to do with clouds.  Dew point is the temperature that a volume of air must be lowered to, to make the moisture in it become visible.  So if the temperature is 70 degrees on the ground and the dew point is 64 degrees that means if you take the air around you an lower the temperature by four degrees you will create clouds.  In the sky, the temperature is usually lower the higher up you go.  So, in our example, if you go up to where the temperature is four degrees lower, that is where the first layer of clouds will be.

    Good question!
