  1. Food is a good one, it unites the characters a lot and says something unique about them. The peanut butter pie, the good crab, etc.

I think food in fiction is fascinating.

  2. The white Swan feather the Mom saved on her exodus from China from a cruel husband ( with the one daughter, the story and symbol of perseverance and hope for daughter to be everything the mother thought she should be.=Be careful what you dream, your dream may become reality but worse then the life you lived. The myth was that the swan was a duck that wished to be a goose and stretched it's neck and in so doing stretched so far that it passed being a goose and became a swan which it did not wish to be, encumbered with a life it did not want. The mom planed to give the feather to the daughter and that it would tie the two together in understanding but the worlds from which both came from differed too much and the mom never learned much English and the daughter never learned Chinese --so a great rift that neither could cross to understanding. The feather represented the hope to bridge the gap in the generation of mother daughter.
