I am an American Citizen in El Salvador. My tourist visa is going to expire on June 4. I have already filed for a one-time extension. What is the fine/consequence for staying in El Salvador on an expired tourist visa? I know that I have to travel out of the CA-4 countries in order to be reissued a proper visa, but what if that is not convenient?

  1. convenient or not you need to leave.  All other documents become invalid when your visa expires.  For example your drivers license is no good.  They can also arrest you, fine you, put you on a plane and not let you come back.

  2. hmmmmm, i thought that you could just travel to honduras or guatamala for 72 hours and get another one.

i overstayed my visa in mexico, and just crossed the land boarder in guatamala and told them i lost the visa card.  they never looked at any stamp in the passport to verify it because.....hmmmm, i guess my passport was so full of stamps?

in costa rica i just spent 3 days in nicaragua and got another 3 months.

i have been to el salvador about 10 times, but never overstayed my visa.

    good luck.
