What are considered to be writing samples when applying for an editorial job?

I'm applying for an editorial internship at a magazine and was wondering what exact type of writing samples they're looking for? I'm probably being very vague but what topics of writing pieces do they look for and how long ....essays, short paragraphs etc.???

I would think it would be a combination of different length articles, and on different subjects.
