HTTP cookies, or more commonly referred to as Web cookies, tracking cookies or just cookies, are parcels of text sent by a server to a web client (usually a browser) and then sent back unchanged by the client each time it accesses that server.

Cookies aren't anything active like a program, they are just a little text document.

Cookies are used because a connection between your computer and a website is closed once the page is downloaded (it doesn't stay open while you look at the page), so cookies are used as a sort of 'memory', for example they can be used to save what's in your 'shopping basket' on websites, or to remember what pages you've looked at for example play.com has things like 'you viewed this item'.

Some cookies are can be used to track your actions (e.g. what sites you look at) for adware purposes, these are 'tracking cookies', which log pages you look at, and can be pulled off your machine by adware sites. these are not necessarily harmful on their own, but can be annoying (the idea is to target you with ads according to the sorts of things you look at).

If you worry about these you can either delete you cookies through internet options (right click the desktop icon and click properties), or run LavaSoft Adaware, which will detect tracking cookies.
