  1. Just a few -- I'll let you do the research.

The president of the United States of America and the president of the Confederate States of America were both born in Kentucky (A monument to Jefferson Davis continues to stand in Fairview, Ky.)

The northernmost skirmish between Rebel and Union forces occurred in Vermont as part of a bank raid.

The battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac foreshadowed modern submarine warfare.

The modern term hooker is derived from women of relaxed virtue who followed after troops under the command of Gen. Hooker.

Gen. Burnside popularized male facial hair in the form of the sideburn.

  2. I can think of two right now:

The first battle of Bull Run (aka Manassas) was fought near Washington, D.C.  People went out to the battlefield with picnic baskets and thought they'd watch the battle for fun.  It turned into a disaster when the Union troops were routed and started to retreat (run away, really) right into the spectators.

Confederate General Stonewall Jackson may have had Asperger's syndrome.  He had many personal quirks and odd habits.  He sometimes led his troops in complete circles.  He disliked fighting on Sundays.  He was convinced one arm was longer than the other, and he'd hold the longer arm up to try to "balance" his body.  But he was a brilliant general who died becasue one of his own troops shot him by accident.

  3. Tad lincoln had a pet goat

lincoln had a dream about his own funeral

a man who had been shot in the leg was saved when it hit a bible that was in his pants pocket and did not go into his leg

  4. war does not have cool facts.

  5. Abraham Lincoln abolished many human rights and most of the constitution. He imprisoned most of the Maryland legislature/statehouse and considered throwing the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in jail. Suspended Habeous Corpus. Was very racist.

The Emancipation Proclamation was one of the most Harmful things for the Union as it spurred a record number of desertions and dissent in cities such as New York.

New York Rioted to seceed from the Union in which Lincoln had to send troops in to supress it.

Nathan Bedford Forrest (General Confederate Army) used an advanced new breed of mobile war which was alot of basis for Blitzkrieg. Though Lee never realized his potential until it was too late.

Of course how disadvantaged the Confederates were in industry, manpower, and weapons. Yet they did spectacular.

Battle of Hampton Roads 1st day. The Confederate navy ruled the seas for one day.

the McLean place was at Bull Run and thus the 1st Battle of Bull Run took place in his back yard. After that he decided to move out of what he thought was harms way so he moved to Appomattox Courthouse where Lee surrendered to Grant in 1865. Thus McLean could say the war started in my backyard and ended in my front parlor.
