  1. There are 2 dimensions in the horizontal plane, length and width.  Length is the longer and width the shorter of these two.

  2. I think you are asking about the meaning of the words length, height and width.

If you are measuring a distance (one dimension), you use the word length.

If you are measuring a flat object (two dimensions), you would have length and width.  Usually the length is longer than the width, but not always.

If you are measuring a solid object (three dimensions), you have length, width and height.  Your question has a good definition for height and width.  Length is third dimension, the distance from front to back.

In an engineering problem, you just have to be careful in drawing a picture of the problem, and you can decide how to label the three dimensions.

  3. In a 3 dimensional space, position of any point can be represented in terms of 3 (same or different in values) coordinates.  Most of us knows these coordinates as (x,y,z). Length, width and height is spatial representation of these coordinates in our 3 dimensional space. They have to be defined this way, as what we assume height is a height only for one perception. For some other perception it could also represent a width. For eg.., Imagine a tall building you are watching from its front side, its height is the distance that is spreading vertically up from the ground. While width and length spreading across this height. Now imagine yourself flying up in the sky and your eyes looking at the the building from the top.. Now what previously was width will become the vertically up distance or height for you. Similarly previous height will now become the length. So its just a perception to assume what is what. But in reality these are the measurements along a straight line, and represented on a coordinate system with respect to some fixed point (possibly origin) . I don't know.. but what do you say?

Moreover its quite human intuitive as well. For eg. Imagine yourself standing tall. Now if someone asks you whats your height? Your basic perception would be your measurement from toe to head? Isn't it? so that's height..Same with the building .. its dimension in the direction parallel to the line joining your toe and head will be called as the HEIGHT. Similarly when someone will ask you about your width, it will definitely be your measurement from one hand to another. So dimension of building measuring parallel to this dimension of yours will be the building WIDTH. Remaining third dimension will by default be the LENGTH. What say??
