  1. direct quotes is what a person (character) said.  Something that is qoutation marks already in the book.

Indirect quotes are what the author said.  Usually not in qoutations because it is narrative.   Which means that the author is speaking, but it is not in qoutations cuz she/he is the one who wrote the book.   It would be pretty funny, if the author wrote everything she/he described about (setting, etc) in qoutations, ....everything (the whole book) would be in qoutations.

  2. A direct quote is taking "word for word" what that person or person said and repeating it.

example of this would be - quoting you - "for a research paper on an author my teacher is asking for at least four direct quotes, however, i donno what she means by this.". (that is a direct quote)

It is a quote that a person said. You are powerphrasing, or putting it in your own words. It's exactly what that person said.

Yes, it can be an author that spoke at one point of their life.

    Hope this helps :)
