Advantages:  Forming new land, tourism to the volcano can help the local economy, excitement, beauty,

Disadvantages:  The obvious dangers such as fire, death, and destruction.  They release a significant amount of carbon dioxide which is a "greenhouse gas", the ash buildup can cause mudslides, and there is often times a lot of seismic activity associated with them.
