  1. The trade off is mostly that there is more labor associated with growing it organically instead of those labor saving chemicals. More hand weeding with no herbicides, more work incorporating organic fertilizers at heavy weights for less concentration than chemicals, more monitoring for pest and disease and the labor involved with fighting problems more in line with organic methods than just spraying a field. For all the labor needed from inexperienced workers (strong backs with no brains only need to apply for work) you need a labor force at low wages that are not just transient migratory persons.

  2. boll wievels

  3. cotton rips all the nutrients out of the soil.so that it must lie fallow and production is lost same as with tobacco. pick another crop.

  4. The only thing I can think of is:  maybe the insecticide sprays farmers use on the crops are bad for the environment.

The problem is not with the fabrics.

    The problem is:

-American grown cotton is processed and shipped to China.  They make the clothes and ship them back to us.  Why aren't we making our own clothes here in America?

  5. There are no downsides to buying it if you aren't considering the higher price. Growing it, you are going to get lower yields, more insect damage, and weeds. It is going to be a lot more labor intensive.

  6. Well, organic and avoidance of GM are often intertwined. But avoidance of GM cotton may be wise mostly because of a very restricted gene pool within the GM variants.

The GM variants have been reproduced from very closely related individuals. China and India both are experiencing major problems related  not to non-organic per se, but to GM cotton. This is predictable with very deep inbreeding.

With non GM cotton, we still can maintain high crop yields, we still have some risk of disease and insect infestations.
