  1. Have you tried not using gravel?  I finally quit the gravel thing in all my tanks - fish, newts.  It's just messy and a pain to keep up on.  What I do now is put a few cool looking rocks of various sizes randomly around the tank and incorporate live plants.  You can get really creative with the rock thing by the way and it is a lot of fun.

As far as an easier way to clean gravel - nope, not really - just vacuum, vacuum, vacuum, ahh ugg blah, vacuum.  Not anymore!!!! : )

Note:  To anchor live plants without  the use of sand or gravel substrate:  use some natural or attractive or weird or whatever containers (make sure non-toxic) fill with small stones and put your plant in!  I like to use the clear glass (small) flower pots.  They are not obtrusive and your eye only notices the stones and the plant.

  2. theres no fast way to do it. you just gotta run it under tap water for ages. some gravel is cleaner than others is all. also at the end run the gravel through a salt water solution. it cleanses it really well before you pop it into your tank.

  3. You can have people hold one on each side a screen, like what you would find on a window or a door. Then pour the gravel on it and wash it really good with a hose. If you can not do that, it will take a while!

  4. I usually use a large strainer or colander, fill it half way with some gravel and rinse giving it a little shake while rinsing. Or you can put some of it into a larger bucket, continuously running the water into the bucket, and using your hands to stir the gravel. These I find are the easiest and fastest methods, and doing this all in a bath tub or outside using a hose work well, but I personally like to use warm or hot water in the bath tub.

  5. use a colender to pour the gravel into and then rince with water and shake

  6. but in in a bucket then add water then add a little table salt . after that mix up the gravle real well and then keep doing it over and over again until the water is clear. that is what i did to my gravel and i only did it 5 or 6 times and its fine.
