Mister if you have crawl space under your house, take flash light and look for mud tunnels going up walls or on support columns. The mud tunnels will be about 1/4 inch wide leading from ground up to wood. Termites go back and forth to the ground for water. If you do not have crawl space go around the inside perimeter of all rooms taping on wall walls near floor and listen for change in sound to dull thud,  the sound will change if lot of termite damage is present.  One thing will help prevent is remove all scrap paper and wood from around and under your house.
