What are easy and cheap ways to make a stock mower into a racing lawn mower?

I have an older John Deere with a Kohler 12.5 ohv engine. What are some inexpensive ways to increase performance of this. this is just a regular, manual lawn tractor.

One easy way would be to change the pulleys. Put a bigger pulley on the engine and smaller one on the transmission.
