  1. If you can't get to sleep in 20mins, get up and do something until you feel tired, then go back to bed with the intent of going straight off to sleep.

Don't use you bed for anything other than sleeping - so don't read in bed, watch tv, play games etc - your bed is for sleeping in so if you only ever sleep in it, then your mind will gradually associate the bed with sleep and it should become easier

  2. COUNT SHEEP!

  3. Well, as a long time insomniac...I have a few suggestions....DON'T COUNT SHEEP!!! It keeps your brain active which will prevent sleep.

Don't read, drink, eat, watch tv, play video games, surf the internet...in your bedroom. Your bedroom should be a place that you rest, or sleep...not play or remain active. Your brain is a like a super computer that learns behavior...if your brain remembers that the bedroom is a place for games or texting...it won't shut down. It will actually become more active because it expects the stimulus.

Make sure your room is dark, you are comfortable (not too hot, not too cold) and turn on a white noise machine, or a radio with soft music (nothing rocking or rap) like classical or even find a CD of lullabyes. A fan will work, or anything that will block out noise from the rest of the house without getting your brain active again.

I've found that closing my eyes and picturing a blank screen (like a movie screen) in my head works the best. It doesn't take any thought, no stimulus...and usually within 10 minutes of starting the visualization process I am asleep.

Also, don't re-hash your day in your head right before bedtime. Don't read a chapter in a book, or try to do homework right before bedtime. Make sure you have at least 30 min - 1 hour of mindless activity (like needlework, crochet, knitting) that you can do without actual thought. That will help your brain to decompress and you won't sit there in bed wondering what Scott said to Tom, who told Shelly, who sits next to Shawa, who's best friends with Lisa....yada yada yada. Also...find someone you can confide in that will keep your confidences. like your mother, a sister or a cousin (NOT a friend...because your best friend will make your worst enemy)...even a school counselor that you can talk to about stuff that upsets you or even has you concerned.

And no...don't take sleeping pills etc. They are habit forming and the longer you take them the more you will need to take in order to achieve the same affect. Start with what I gave you and see if that doesn't help.

You can also try a nice soothing bath...or a glass of warm milk (yes it DOES work). Don't eat too close to going to bed...and don't drink alcohol or do drugs because these also will affect your sleep patterns. And until you get into a better sleeping pattern...when you can't go to sleep...get up, sit in the living room with the light off for 20 minutes...then try to go back to bed. Don't lay there in bed wide awake. It's counter-productive. And if you are excited about going back to school...relax. After tomorrow...nothing else will be exciting until the last day of school.

    Good luck and happy dreaming.
