  1. Rainforests act as the world's thermostat by regulating temperatures and weather patterns.

One-fifth of the world’s fresh water is found in the Amazon Basin.

Rainforests are critical in maintaining the Earth's limited supply of drinking and fresh water.

Rainforests provide many important products for people: timber, coffee, cocoa and many medicinal products, including those used in the treatment of cancer.

More than 2,000 tropical forest plants have been identified by scientists as having anti-cancer properties

Nearly 90 percent of the 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty worldwide depend on forests for their livelihoods.

  2. The rain forests are the main carbon dioxide 'sinks' and generators of oxygen.  They are major components for stabilizing the earth's temperature, after the oceans and its currents.

They hold the vast majority of animal and plant species, after the oceans.  They hold in reserve a huge amount of genetic information that can not be held elsewhere.

A huge percent of humans live directly in the rain forests and almost everybody depends on them for many different products, from primary wood supplies to exotic medicines to mineral deposits.

  3. The rain forest is a primary habitat for many species of wildlife, plants and animals. It helps regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and gives off clean oxygen.
