  4. Ephemeral rivers are rivers that do not always flow, that is, they dry up. How often, and for how long they dry up varies. It depends on the river. Some ephemeral rivers are seasonal which means for a certain time of the year hey can be expected to run and for others they can be expected to be dry. Others are dry most of the time, and run only whenever after it rains. There are many ephemeral rivers in deserts and other dry climates, as well as climates that are humid part of the year and very dry for another part of the year.

  6. In some areas rain is generally rare but, sometimes, very heavy.  That can lead to the occasional appearance of rivers in beds that are mostly waterless.  This is fairly common in deserts and semi-deserts.  Those are ephemeral rivers.
