  1. Small class sizes,  Adequate number of age appropriate toys, Trained staff...not teenagers. good security so that no one can come and get a child not theirs, no adult is left alone with a small number of children (even if they are staff, you have known them forever, etc) in a closed room, educational well rounded activities for each age group.

  2. Good answers - also that children are doing hands on, play based activities rather than worksheet. I also look for a staff that wears comfortable clothes, so you know they can get down on the floor and get dirty and a staff handbook that tells you to send kids in the same. I interviewed at a school once where they told me they had no sandbox because the parents didn't want the kids to get dirty and I ran like the wind. Oh, and look at the artwork. Is it all the same? Is it coloring sheets? Did the kids do it or did the teachers do it?

  3. Both are bery good answers.  Here are some more  items to think about.  Is the center accredited.  They have hgher standards since they have to pass a very high inspection.  How many crdits do the teachers have if 6 or 12 is the minium the state requires and that is all the teachers have go some where else.  Look in the class rooms you should be able to stand anywhere in the room and see every part of the room with no obstruction.  WHat kind of food do they feed the children?  They should also do something called family dining, where the children try to serve themselves as much as possible.   How many children are in a classroom.  Think how hard it is to dela with 3 or 4 children at a time and the teacher could have as many as 15, 12.  Also if they are toddlers there should be nor more than 12 in a room if there is an aid if no aid no more than 8.  Just imagine how hard it would be to control 11 children why you change one diaper.  It is about impossible.  Also does the staff change alot.  Not good for the children.  Are toys placed easily for the child to reach. Also look at the play ground and outside toys.  Is there lots for them to do and play with?  I know a lot of childcare centers are trying to get away from the sandboxes, because they get dirty, or cats use it a a kitty litter box.  But if they cover it every night the cats can't get into to.  I would perfer a sandbox to the wood chips that some of the childcare centers have. Hope this helps.  I used to work in a child care center so these are things I would ask or look for.
