By 'fun and authentic things' in mean things which are unique to that particular city.

ie BARCELONA (visit Sagrada Famillia, ride on the cable car, ascend the heights of Tibidabo, go sightseeing in the Exiemple, peruse the trophy room of the Nou Camp, party on Las Ramblas etc)

But what can I do in Rome which is unique to Rome?

  1. Well, I'm italian but not from Rome...anyway I'd say:

go and see a couple of the beautiful churches that you can find only there ( St. Peter of course, bul also the Pantheon)

eat the real pizza in a pizzeria far from tourists' area, or drink a "grattachecca" to refresh in these hot summer days...

enjoy the Tevere by night: have a little walk undet the streetlamps

declare your love to your partner as roman teenagers do: go to Ponte Milvio and lock a padlock (with a love phrase on) to the lamp in the middle of the bridge.

Rome is big, beautiful...a mess :)

  2. Here are some places fun and authentic to Rome.

Toss a coin in the Trevi fountain (to insure a return to Rome)

Visit St Peter's and The Vatican

A must visit to Colosseum/Roman Forum

Visit Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere (a true Roman Square)

Have your photo taken on the Famous Spanish Steps

A visit to Bulgari Jewerly Store (a Roman Tiffany's)

Much to see and do in Rome.

    Enjoy and have fun

  3. Go to Piazza Navona and Pantheon for a walk in the evening, and take a "Cremolato" ice cream at a small shop just near the Pantheon.

Pay a visit to the wonderful Galleria Borghese, in the Villa Borghese garden (remember to call and make  a reservation beforehand).

Go to one of the many tipical restaurant in Testaccio and eat the "Pasta alla carbonara" and the "Abbacchio scottadito" (roasted lamb that you should eat with your finger)

Take a walk about in the old ghetto, near Piazza Venezia, and enjoy the atmosphere. Have dinner in a great roman-jewish restaurant near the Portico d'Ottavia

  4. climb a trillion (well a lot of) stairs to the top of the cupola in st peters and look over the edge of the dome. scary S**t if you dont have a head for heights.

get your photo taken with the gladiators outside the colosseum, after giving them €3, so they dont scald you for 5 or 10 after the photo.

    drink REAL coffee.
