What are fun ways to teach my daughter numbers?

She can count, kind of, to 20. She leaves out some numbers some times and then other times she'll remember the last numbers she left out but leave different ones out the next time around. Also, I need interesting and fun ways to help her recognize the numbers. Nothing stressful but some ideas just to play with and help her out. She's already counting so I don't want to push her but encourage her to learn. They gotta be fun because she has a short attention span but she REALLY loves to learn.

  1. Make a song. Little girls love to sing. You can sing the numbers and have her repeat it. Or you can buy a puzzle where she has to put the numbers on the right place. Doing that will help her have fun, and learn at the same time. Also, don't rush her, because eventually she'll learn the numbers in school

  2. To recognize numbers, it takes a lot of visual practice - so you might want to start with 1, 2, 3 and use flashcards or just draw them for her.  Just repeat until she has those 3 and then you can add one while still reveiwing the ones she knows.  A fun thing that I did with preschoolers was used masking tape to make a big number on the carpet and then we walked/jumped/hopped on it to help the kids that are hands on learners remember what it looks like.  It was really fun and helped kids remember.

  3. I write out  1- one, 2-two 3, 4, 5 then my son copies. then we draw 1 circle, 2 stars, 3 tri angles, 4 squares, 5 squiggles.

that way he sees the number, next to the word, next to the amount. He loves it. we have not gone any further with the writing, when he is set on that then I will go on.

  4. I do not know how old your daughter is but with my kids we used shaving cream.. we put shaving cream on a cookie sheet and let them make the numbers and letters in it.. it can be messy, but the kids love it, it is really hands on and they have a blast

  5. I have a cd with songs on there that they just sing about numbers and counting. My daughter is 14 months old and loves listening to it.

Also, another suggestion would be to get those magnet letters/numbers. She may like to play with the magnets on the fridge.

  6. I don't know if this will work, but put numbers 1 - 20 on separate flash cards- bright colors help with a short attention span- and and mix up the order. tell her to put them in order. I remember this helping me a lot because  I would forget some numbers. this might help with her forgetting numbers, and she will have visual pictures in her head while counting.

  7. get a whole bunch of something small and edible that she will love to eat and have eat 1 everytime she counts to a big number of your choice while using the small things.

  8. Count everything you do.

It is normal to skip some numbers, my son always managed to miss 7 then once he got his 1 to 10 he started missing 17, lol.

One thing not mentioned so far is if you are going for walks point out the numbers on peoples letterboxes and for sale signs or anything else with big numbers on it.

Also easy to do at the supermarket.  Count the fruit and veges as you put them in the bag

  9. Good for her!!

Leaving some of the numbers out is absolutely normal. ALL kids do. It's a lot to remember!!

Get some CDs and play them in the car while you are driving.

    Works great.

    Count everything you see.

    Sesame Street is wonderful
