What are gas prices in Guatemala?

I am trying to figure the cost to drive from Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango. A friend's family member is driving me, and returning to Guatemala City. I am trying to budget so that I pay him a fair price for his expenses.

I know that from Guate City to Quetzaltenango it's about a 4 or 5 hour drive and the cost of gas is more than here (St. Louis, MO) so my guess would be about $5.  Have fun but be very careful.

The average gas price as of yesterday in the country of Guatemala was 36.99 Quetzales per gallon.  The cheapest Ive seen is 34.40 Quetzales and the most expensive Ive seen is 38.40 Quetzales.  That is not diesel.  Dieslel is more expensive right now.  The exchange rate is approximately 7.5 Quetzales to the dollar meaning that the average is just barely under 5 dollars per gallon.  From Guatemala City it is about 4 hours with no traffic or any problems, but it can take you as little as 3 hours, although rare.  Have a fun trip!

There is alot of road construction between G.C. and Quetzaltenango, and if you cath a bad day it can take an extra hour or two to get there.  A good greyhound bus ticket costs $7.25 or $7.50 american, and a budget line even less.  At this price, it way beats the many gallons of gas you will buy at about $5 a gallon.

I went to Guatemala City (5/27 - 6/2) and spent a week there. The price of gas was 36.49 quetzales at the time that I went. Also, the exchange rate was 1 dollar=7.26 quetzales at the  bank where I made the exchange.
