  1. I think the biggest that would lead to higher (maybe the word here is "denser") populations of animals and plants is if the topography of the area hinders or reduces the number of predators they would have to deal with.

    I think remoteness and the inability of other species to adapt to that region would also contribute.

    1.  Altitude - the higher, the colder and more susceptible to frost (usually)

    2.  Proximity to a body of water or aquifer

    3.  Latitude --those areas near the equator have more annual sunlight, and areas near the poles are cold.  Latitude also has an impact on the types of soils and water availability.  The subtropics are known for dry heat climate, and the tropics are known for humid hot climate.
