  1. well to be honest there are many surfboard manufactures catering for a variety of needs. Depending on your particular requirements you may or may not find a lot of brands useful.

On one hand you have the popular companies such as quicksilver, animal and billabong however these can entail huge costs and the focus would be majorly on aesthetics.

However you could always go down the route of lesser know but more professional surf brands such as body glove, circle 1 and alder.

My advice is to surf(no pun intended) the web with your specific criteria and find recommended sites, it as also advised you speek in a store to a professional who knows what they are talking about.

Surf boards have developed greatly from when first produced from wood, nowerdays the fibreglass bodies are much more lightweight however very suseptable to dents and other damages, also as you can imagine costs have rocketed as the popular sport has grown into a new surf culture popular all over the world, it has even established seaside cities such as Newquay, Cornwall, England.

Best of luck with finding a board suited to you.
