If you live together, let him sleep in that day... that is if he has the day off.  If he has to work, then let him rest over the week end.  Ask him if there is something special that he has wanted for a while, and try to fulfill that wish for him.

Men always enjoy a home cooked meal, if you don't cook, call up his mom and ask her what his favorite b-day food was as a child, and for the recipe.

In my house, we are allowed to sleep until we want that day, or the following weekend, I cook their favorite meals, I get to go to any restaurant on my birth day, and we eat cake and ice cream.  I do appreciate the material gifts, but making their b-day and mine a special day, seems to bring us more joy.
