Question:

What are good cages for rats?

I need a cage example; I have the Ferplast Furet Plus at the moment, and also a few other spare small cages. My two females (who I bought and were pregnant unknowingly to me until I sussed it out!) had babies and are now in seperate cages. I am keeping two females and I will then have four rats. I need a big cage, and I'd like an extendable one. Extendable means I can keep adding and extending. I know now that Crittertrail cages have tubes that are too small for adult rats, much to my disappointment! I can't find any cages that are big enough for rats that extend with tubes into other living quarters. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't want a plastic tub cage really, unless I could drill a hole for connectors. Any ideas? I really don't want them to be stuck in one cage. Can you get spare Ferplast parts with connector holes? I've never seen them if you can!

  1. I have 3 Jenny cages and use them in rotation

  2. i would use a hamster cage. When my dad was younger he had hamster tubes that ran across the top of his room and so they lived by his ceiling and just ran around all day it was pretty cool

  3. There really aren't any extendable rat cages, I'm afraid. Not that I know of anyway. Please ignore the people telling you to get hamster cages or stick your rats in aquariums. Clearly some people here aren't so great on rat care.

  4. You should actually get a fish aquarium due to the fact that rats need something to chew on. They will eventually chew threw anything plastic and/or metal. My rat Jerry escaped that way from a cage that way.

my bro had this one and she loved it!!!!

  6. When you get a bigger cage, don't buy one, build one :D And it's so much more fun lol because you get to design them and make them as big and crazy as you like!!Here's some good sites-

The second one's German, but it has some really great cages!! =]

Hope you like them lol :P

  7. hamster cages because they are the same size

  8. metal cage is best get a big one

  9. STRONG ones as rats chew  xx Hannah xx Amy's sister

  10. Rats CANNOT live in Hamster cages. People.. yikes... anyway you need nice metal cages. I like ones from Martin Cages. The bigger the better. Instead of tubes they need ramps cause its easier to clean. Tubes will be terrible for rats since they pee on everything. I also have boughten many Martin cages and have connected them with large diameter PVC's pipes tubes. I take a wire cutter and cut to fit the tube and use duct tape on the outside and adhesive to keep them connected. They LOVE it. They cant chew out and they dont chew on the PVC

just to clarify the PVC tube or pipes should be large enough to get your hand into to wipe out daily with a weak bleach cleaning solution. They should ONLY be used to connect the ages together.

  15. this may not answer your question but i am planning to put the top off one of my jenny rat cages onto  another one so its higher, this way they have more room and its not one cage as such

i associate cages attached with tubes more with hamsters so have never tried or wanted to try this but good luck with it
