  2. Before we get to the food, I just went through a remodel and you might want to get some Xanax or Valium from your doctor to keep sane throughout the remodel.  Now to your question:

Most vegetables do dandy in both a steamer and the microwave.....Meats are going to be a problem in a steamer, except for fish.  Beef and pork will not achieve the brown crust that is familiar when frying, broiling or grilling meats.....Fish and chicken can be microwaved or steamed, but will have a different texture to them.....You might want to go to the Food Network site and type in STEAMED FOODS and go from there......Good luck with the kitchen remodel.....What was supposed to take 2 weeks, ended up to be the entire summer, so be in store to roll with the punches.....'cuse there will be plenty of those, trust me......

  4. potstickers (chinese dumplings)

    soups

    rice/rice pudding

    cold sandwiches (using no heat!)

  5. Try this, put 2 cups of water, 1 cup of rice, 1 cup of frozen vegetables and a piece of frozen fish in your steamer.  Then close the lid and steam away.  Open it up and voila!  A nice healthy dinner.

  6. cantonese steamed chicken

    Prep Time: 15 minutes

    Cook Time: 30 minutes

    Ingredients:

4 - 6 medium sized Chinese dried mushrooms (reserve 1 tablespoon soaking liquid)

    1 1/2 pounds assorted chicken pieces, bone-in

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    Pepper, to taste

    1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce (4 1/2 teaspoons)

1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry

    1 teaspoon sugar

    1 teaspoon sesame oil

    1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch

2 slices ginger, shredded (about 1 tablespoon)

1 green onion (spring onion, scallion), diced

    Preparation:

Soak the dried mushrooms in a bowl of warm water for 20 minutes, or until they have softened. Squeeze out the excess water, cut the stems off the mushrooms and thinly slice. Reserve 1 tablespoon of the mushroom soaking liquid.

Use a heavy cleaver to chop the chicken through the bone into bite-sized pieces. Place in a heatproof bowl and add the salt, pepper, soy sauce, rice wine or sherry, sugar, sesame oil, reserved mushroom liquid and cornstarch. Allow to marinate while bringing water to a boil for steaming.

Place the bowl on a rack in a pot for steaming or in a steamer such as a bamboo steamer in a wok. Place the chicken pieces in the middle of the plate and surround with the mushrooms. Sprinkle the shredded ginger and green onion over top. Steam the chicken over boiling water for 15 - 20 minutes, making sure it is thoroughly cooked. Serve over rice.

  7. Salmon in the microwave and steamed vegetables or just as easy with a salad and steamed potatoes.

  8. I like cooking chicken in a steamer, I put a whole chicken in and it cooks so nice, really moist and tasty. Obviously any vegetables can go in too. You can steam eggs as well.
