Question:

What are good music schools for vocal/opera in Germany?

I mean, good music universities/conservatories for vocal/opera OR any universities with good music/vocal program (to be an opera singer) in Germany?

Btw are universities in Germany still free of tuition fee? And if they are, does it also apply to foreign students as well? How much is the usual anual cost for a (music) collegeman in Germany (i.e. tuition fee, books, rooms/dorms, cost of livings etc)? And how much is it converted into US$?

Thanx!

p.s I've already tried to ask this in the "Higher Education" section but I haven't got any reply yet.

  1. Hanns Eisler Academy in Berlin is very good! Here is the link (english): http://www.hfmberlin.de/en/Homepage.html

  2. The above links are great, I'd just like to add the Robert Schumann school in Düsseldorf. You can find some details here:

  3. Here is a link with all the good music schools:

There are a lot of foreign students in Germany but I don't know much about the fees...it's different and there are scholarships too.  Rooms for students are not so expensive but most students in Germany have a part time job like waiter/waitress. Think most studends manage it to live for about 500 € in month that's 783.05 U.S. dollars.

  4. The Musikhochschule Lübeck has gathered some info for foreign students at

http://www.mh-luebeck.de/index.php?id=68... , large parts of it basically apply to all German universities.

The need to pay a tuition fee depends on the state the school is in, some states have started to charge fees in the past two or three years, some not. Some take fees per semester, some take fees for exams only. Some want the money in advance, some wait until you start to actually earn money.

If there are fees per term, the amount seems to be around 500 € per semester (multiply by 1.5 to get US$).

Note that all universities require a working knowledge of the German language. Some offer extra language courses for foreigners (as the Lübeck school) but neverthless they won't accept students who have nothing to begin with.

That said, a number of universities with opera studies:
