Yang style has a good reputation.

By reputation, do you mean good school/teacher?  Look for a kung fu/ tai chi school over a gym that offers a tai chi class.  The detail and attitude towards application are greater in a school where tai chi is the main focus.  Group classes are hit or miss at most gyms.  That is not to say that there aren't excellent teachers at some gyms.  

As the head instructor what their teaching style is like and express what you are trying to get out of tai chi.

When learned correctly, tai chi is both a great exercise and a great martial art for self defense.
