What are good snorkel spots on Catalina?

I live in long beach. So, I'll go for a weekend. I have my own equipment. I'm looking for good spots and accomdations.

  1. I believe the only accomodations are in Avalon, though if you're camping you might be able to stop just about anywhere. (I don't know if thre are permits required, though.)

    I don't know if the undersea garden area just east of Avalon harbor is open to divers -- it's closed to fishing. But really, almost anywhere around the island is probably good. 30 years ago I went to the (now closed) Boy Scout camp at Emerald Bay up near Arrow Point on the western section of the island, and snorkeled there and around the point at Parson's Landing. Both places have decent beaches, too.

    The main thing to watch out for are the sportfishermen -- especially on summer weekends, it can get busy out there, and you don't want to get messed up in their lines or run over by their boats.
