What are good surf fishing spots in orange county? What is the best bait?

I never surf fished that far south, but off LA and Ventura I did best using mussel (pick them off rocks at low tide, open them with a tough, cheap knife, and scrape the innards out, then hook them through a tough part). Soft-shell sand crabs work as well, as do cut frozen/salted anchovies, but mussel is my favorite. (You can also buy it already shelled at bait shops.)

I don't know any spots, though off hand you'll do best off beaches where there are no swimmers or surfers. Fish off open beaches for perch and corbina; if there are jetties or natural rocky areas, you can catch other species (bass, opaleye, etc.)

For specifics, check with a bait shop in that area.
