  1. I taught my kitten through behavioral conditioning to ask first before she will jump up into my lap. I also taught her to not tickle me with her whiskers while I'm sleeping. I taught her to be calm while giving her a manicure/pedicure (clipping her claws) and also when giving her a bath.

I taught her to pay attention to me when I need her to stop doing something like scratching the carpet or eating some plastic or something like that...  And I taught her to use a scratching post.

Really, you have to pay attention to your cat and the two of you can come to mutual agreements of what sort of behaviors need to be encouraged or discouraged... and how to communicate with each other.

  2. It is a great time to teach your kitten what is acceptable and what is not acceptable behavior.

Jumping on your lap or the table while the humans are eating? Not acceptable. Say NO and put the cat back on the floor. If it persists you should use the old spray-bottle of water to give it a quick spritz or get a can of compressed air--used for cleaning keyboards and electrical items--and spritz it with the air! They hate that.

Take this time to show your cat where it is welcome by putting it on good bedding places and petting it and shooing it off of unwelcome places like kitchen counter tops.

It is very easy to teach kittens and once they learn you have a good cat for (almost) ever! Good luck with your new family member!
