  1. University of Toronto

    McGill University

  2. Hi. According to Maclean's Guide to Canadian Universities (2007), the top universities include (in order): University of Toronto (Ontario), Universite de Montreal (Quebec), McGill University (Quebec), University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, McMaster University (Ontario), University of Calgary, University of Ottawa (Ontario), Universite Laval (Quebec) and University of Western Ontario. That said, there are many, many, additional options in Canada and they should all be explored to ensure that your friend not only chooses a school that's good, but one that fits both their academic and social needs. There are some good search engines on the “Finding Your School” page on the website below (doesn't matter what country you're from).

As far as scholarships, as an 'international student' they can be hard to find as a first year student. For example, in the U.S. the typical scenario is that any scholarship money (e.g., money that doesn't have to be paid back) has to be spend in the U.S. In most cases it's easier to find scholarships (called bursaries) on your Canadian campus as a second, third or fourth years student. There are exceptions, so any of the schools your friend is interested in attending should be checked first. And what is typical in the U.S. might not be the norm for students from other countries. Most schools have financial aid opportunities spelled right out on their websites. If by chance your friend is from the States, the "Educational Funding" page on the website below will be useful.

    I hope this helps. :*)
