  1. Green onion used to be called "Spring Onions" but because someone at an E.C. food meeting had nothing better to do than put forward the idea that this was not P.C. (and which was subsequently approved for no known reason on earth) so from then on we all have to call them "Salad Onions"

  2. Green onions and scallions are just immature onions that are pulled from the ground before a prominent bulb has formed and their tops are still green. Scallions are considered younger than a green onion because they should not have a bulb, while green onions should have a miniature bulb. Both the bulb and bright green tops are edible, and are sold in bunches. Recipes will call for using either just the white part, or both the white and green part of the green onion or scallion. Generally, the white part is cooked, and the green part is used as a garnish or in cold preparations. In a pinch you can substitute the green part for chives.

So yes you can buy them from supermarkets.

  3. The answers here reveal the fact that the British eat either immature onions (and strains developed to never really mature) which are called scallions or spring onions, or they eat onions pulled and dried for storing the bulbs. Green onions are onions that are fully developed, have a fine green plant, are full size, and resemble a leek. You will see them everywhere when you step off the island of Britain. The term comes from America where they are equally omni-present. How did the British loose their knowledge of food...in the industrial revolution perhaps? I was asked by a customer here (pointing at the vegetable) What is that? That was a tomato!!!

  7. Green onions, I think, are sold as spring onions or salad onions and yes, you should be able to find them in any supermarket, usually where the rest of the salad veg is.

You may also find them under various regional names.

Although thinnings of standard onions can be used as salad onions, (these are the ones called green) the spring/salad onions are specific varieties grown for using in salads.
