  1. Usually means connected directly to the mains power circuit via a fused spur outlet, rather than by means of a plug and socket. Advantage is you can't unplug the appliance and stick something else in its place which might not be suitable, or accidently unplug to run something else for something you want permanaently connected eg burglar alarm, and people cant wander off with the appliance (kettles in shared facilities, that kind of thing) Disadvantage you need electrician if you want to diconnect for removing or replacement (eg cookers) or you have to turn off the whole circuit to replace the fuse if it's not a switched or isolated spur outlet.

  2. Hi the best example is smoke detectors. As from the 1st of July 2007 any new home built, all detectors need to be hard wired supplied (powered) not battery powered.  .E G connected to 240 or the mains power supply.

  3. A good example would be a whole house A/C unit. The unit is connected directly to the breaker box with a 2/20 amp breaker

  4. Most electric ovens are hard wired and some come with 15amp or 20 amp leads. Most electrical appliances that are fixed and not removable.

  5. Power supply that is built in to the unit.

  6. If something's hard wired it basically means it's not connected with a plug - it's actually wired directly into the power supply.  You usually see it with ovens as they're not likely to be moved around.
